Player Safety Initiative


Nothing is more important than keeping our young athletes safe. To ensure that every WYB program is operating as safely as possible, WYB has implemented a 4-part Player Safety initiative that is required for all adults who will be working with minors through Worthington Youth Boosters.


Requirements

1) BACKGROUND CHECK (good for 3 years)

Criminal Background Screening allow our organization to confidently utilize coaches and volunteers who have no recorded history of abuse or misconduct. WYB uses Yarkstik, a market-leading background screening tool, to properly screen all adults who will be working with minors.


ATHLETE SAFETY TRAINING COURSES

Every athlete participating within the Worthington Youth Boosters should feel safe and supported by the adults leading their programs. The following training courses are required to work with youth athletes:


2) Concussion Awareness & Protocol Training (good for 3 years)

Ohio’s Return-to-Play law (Ohio Revised Code (ORC) 3313.539 or Ohio Revised Code (ORC) 3314.03) requires that Ohio youth athletes who are suspected of sustaining a concussion MUST be removed from practice or play and mandates Return-to-Play protocols. Youth sports coaches are required to complete concussion training every three years.


Preferred Training Course from NFHS/CDC:  Learn the signs and symptoms of concussions, proven recovery methods, return-to-play protocols, and overall tips for managing athletes who are showing signs of concussions. A certificate of completion from any concussion training course derived from CDC guidelines will be accepted.


3) Abuse Prevention Training Course (good for 3 years)

Senate Bill 534 "Protecting Young Victims from Sexual Abuse and Safe Sport Authorization Act of 2017" is a bill that creates new a standard of care within youth-serving organizations (including youth sports organizations) for preventing abuse, reporting abuse, and providing education on abuse prevention. Specifically, Section 204 requires consistent training for all adult members who are in regular contact with amateur athletes who are minors regarding the prevention and reporting of child abuse. 


Preferred Training Course from NFHS/SafeSport: Learn how to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to abuse in sports. A certificate of completion from any abuse prevention training course derived from SafeSport guidelines will be accepted.


4) Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Training (annual)

Ohio law (Revised Code 3707.58) known as Lindsay's Law states: “No individual shall coach an athletic activity organized by a youth sports organization unless the individual has completed, on an annual basis, the sudden cardiac arrest training course approved by the department of health.”


Learn about Sudden Cardiac Arrest—when the heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops beating, cutting off blood flow to the brain and other vital organs—a concern in youth sports today. ODH Training on SCA for coaches includes:
